2021 📍Kyoto–Osaka
In the spring of 2021, Kohei Maeda moved from Kyoto, where he had lived for five years, to Osaka. This was a performance in which he travelled downstream from the Katsura River in Kyoto to the boat landing at Kitakagaya in Osaka on a raft constructed from the tatami mats of his Kyoto home (Hokusei-ryo); I believe it was a far more poignant ‘act’ than that. Drawing on the act of a single artist moving from point A to point B, the work depicted the psychological difficulty of moving during the ‘Stay Home’ period. The footage was recorded from the riverbank using smartphones and other devices by viewers and people who had come to support and celebrate the move. It captures the river journey from Kyoto to Namura in Osaka. The raft, constructed from traditional tatami mats, Styrofoam, wooden flooring and truck tyre tubes, travelled south from the Kuga Bridge on the Katsura River in Kyoto, passing through the Kema Lock on the Yodo River, and on to the former Namura Shipyard site at the confluence of the Okawa and Kizu Rivers. The oars consisted of stainless steel shafts with wooden blades. The journey took a total of three nights and four days, travelling at a speed of 3 km/h. Maeda, a member of the crew, filmed and streamed the journey using an iPhone 10s. In addition, footage was provided by drivers of accompanying vehicles and spectators who filmed from the riverbank using their smartphones.
